FAQs
Everything you're wondering about EMS training at EMS Body Atelier — sessions, safety, pricing, effectiveness, and what it actually feels like.
-
EMS — Electro Muscular Stimulation — uses carefully controlled electrical impulses to stimulate and contract your muscles, mimicking the signals your own nervous system already sends. It reaches deep muscle fibers conventional training can't touch, activating more of your body in a fraction of the time. At our downtown Santa Barbara studio, every session runs through the FDA-cleared Wiemspro suit with a trainer guiding the intensity the whole way. Sessions are just 20 minutes, once or twice a week.
-
A standard strength session works your muscles the way you move them—one group at a time, through however many reps you can manage. EMS activates your abs, glutes, legs, chest, arms, and back simultaneously, and each muscle group is controlled independently and adjusted in real time by your trainer. That's the whole reason 20 minutes of EMS training at EMS Body Atelier in Santa Barbara is more effective than hours in the gym: more muscle, engaged more completely, all at once.
-
Both — you're moving the whole time, working through real strength training and Pilates-inspired movement while the suit fires on top of it. What you'll feel is tingling at first, then your muscles tightening and contracting on their own, which catches people off guard — there's no everyday equivalent to a muscle firing without you telling it to. It's not painful and it's not a shock; the current runs through a damp suit designed to make muscles fire, not shock you, similar to a TENS unit used in physical therapy. You'll feel it as pressure deep in the muscle, not your skin or joints, with your trainer adjusting intensity in real time.
-
Yes, EMS training is safe. It's backed by peer-reviewed research, including studies from the American Heart Association and the Journal of Applied Physiology, and it's been used in therapeutic and athletic settings since the 1960s. EMS isn't right for everyone though: it's not compatible with pregnancy, pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices, epilepsy, or certain other medical conditions. If you're unsure whether it's right for you, reach out—we're happy to talk through your specific situation.

For a lot of people, EMS isn't just possible with a limitation, it's the most effective option available. Traditional strength training often asks you to load the exact joint or movement pattern that's giving you trouble; EMS doesn't. Each muscle group is controlled independently, so your trainer can fully activate everything around an injury while it heals, with no impact and no heavy loading required. That's exactly why EMS shows up in injury recovery and pre/post-op conditioning. It can build and maintain real strength when conventional training can't touch that area at all. Tell your trainer what you're working with, and they'll build the session around it from the start.

Pretty much anyone looking to build strength, move better, or recover faster, including people managing pain or working back from injury, postpartum clients rebuilding core and pelvic floor strength, busy professionals who don't have an hour to spare, and lifelong athletes looking for an edge. Our trainers tailor every session to where your body is that day.
-
It's one of the reasons this studio exists. Our co-founder Colleen came to EMS through her own postpartum pelvic floor recovery, and it's a big part of what we train for—strengthening the deep core and pelvic floor muscles that carry you through the fourth trimester and beyond. If you're navigating postpartum recovery, tell your trainer going in so your session is built around it.
"I started EMS as soon as I was cleared from a C-section, 6 weeks PP. It has done wonders for my recovery in reattaching, firing and strengthening my core in ways that every other workout has not." — Adlee Kass -
EMS once or twice a week is the standard cadence, and clients feel it working on that schedule even if they’re doing no other workouts. That said, regular stretching makes a real difference in how you feel and how fast you progress. Pilates in particular is a natural complement to EMS, which is part of why Atwill Pilates and EMS Body Atelier are run by the same team.

ust show up — at the studio we get you set up in an EMS baselayer set; for in-home sessions we bring everything (suit, baselayer, mat, weights, bands), you just need room for a yoga mat. Avoid strenuous exercise that day and drink plenty of water beforehand. Once you're suited up, your trainer guides you through low-impact strength training and Pilates-inspired movement while the suit activates every major muscle group at once — nothing about it feels like standing still. Expect to sweat, and expect to feel muscles you didn't know you had.
"EMS was one of the most interesting and unique athletic experiences I've ever had. The instructors — Angelica and Amit — were both knowledgeable in the EMS practice and their experience as trainers was great. The facility was clean and easy to find." — Jenni Belford

Most people feel it the next day, with soreness typically peaking around day two or three. That feeling is your body responding to one of the most effective workouts it's ever had. Hydrate well, take it easy for a day or two, and let your muscles recover. It fades quickly, and it gets more manageable session over session.
"Had an amazing (and surprisingly soreness-inducing!) first-time session... My workout was not only incredibly efficient but also uniquely taxing. It would be a great complement to and accelerant of any exercise routine, particularly for anyone with limited time." — Steven V

Certainly faster than any other training method gets you there. Most clients feel it working by the first or second session (more energy, stronger, better posture) and because EMS activates more muscle, more completely, in every 20-minute session than an hour of conventional training does, consistent visible change (leaner muscle, less cellulite, nicer booty) shows up in weeks, not months.
"This 20-minute EMS workout was surprisingly intense, feeling like a much longer weightlifting session... I loved the effectiveness in such a short time frame." — Sarah JR

Absolutely! Duet sessions let you and a partner train together, each getting the same level of individual customization, guided by the same trainer. Duet sessions are really fun and a great way to push your workout even further.
